The Cham Silk at “She Trades Exhibition”

This is just one step forward in promoting these unique, handmade silk products that are not only beautiful cloth but also reflective of designs that were passed down the generations (going back into the early 20th century and likely earlier). The products are both a wonderful way to help the lift up the sets of families behind these products and their communities and ensure this exquisite form of Cambodian silk weaving continues to be available and sustainable for future generations. It is both an example of cultural heritage preservation as much as a social enterprise project.

Under the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia suffered war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide—but not only the genocide of people, there was also a cultural genocide, where the Cambodian people’s way of life, as reflected in certain cultural heritage, was targeted and nearly destroyed. The art of Cham silk weaving is one example of the Cham identity that managed to partially survive and this project, which is reflected in these silk cloth, ensures the artistry, skills, techniques, and history behind this industry are not lost but re-established for future generations.
